Search the databases

A text search is available on the home page for quick access to statistical data.

How the text search works:

  • Enter search term: The search is performed in the keys and titles of the data.
  • Search for multiple terms (Boolean AND): It is possible to search for multiple terms simultaneously. For example, entering "GBP EUR" will only display data that contains both terms.
  • Exclude terms (Boolean EXCLUDE): To exclude a term, use the "-" symbol. Example: "GBP-EUR" will display only data with GBP but without EUR.
  • Bilingual search: Titles in both languages (German and English) are always searched.

After executing the search, you will be redirected to the time series search page, where the results are displayed.

The time series search page is accessible in two ways:

  • By executing the text search on the home page.
  • Directly accessing the Time Series Search page.

The time series search offers four different search options, which can be selected via the navigation menu:

  • All time series: Search is performed across the Bundesbank’s entire dataset.
  • Macroeconomic time series: Searches are only made for macroeconomic time series, which are broken down into subject areas and categories.
  • Macroeconomic real-time database: Searches are only made in real-time macroeconomic data, which are broken down into subject areas and categories.
  • Data Structure: This search option allows filtering based on SDMX data structures.

After the search, the results can be sorted by different parameters. The "Relevance" parameter takes into account both the timeliness and the matching of the search terms.

 All time series

All macroeconomic time series and real-time data offered by the Bundesbank on its website are displayed.

The results can be filtered using the text search as well as by narrowing down the available key components.

Macroeconomic time series

In this section, only the macroeconomic time series offered on the Bundesbank's website are searched.

All time series are organized into topics and categories.

First, a topic must be selected. Subsequently, a search can be conducted within the entire topic or within a specific category of that topic, for example, "External sector" → "Current account."

After making a selection, further filtering can be done using the text search and key components.

Macroeconomic real-time database

In this section, only the macroeconomic real-time data offered on the Bundesbank's website are searched.

All real-time data are organized into topics and categories.

First, a topic must be selected. Subsequently, a search can be conducted within the entire topic or within a specific category of that topic, for example, "National accounts" → "Gross domestic product".

After making a selection, further filtering can be done using the text search and key components.

Data structure

The data and metadata of the Bundesbank are provided in accordance with the SDMX standard. The data are recorded in data flow. For example, the BBEE1 stands for "effective exchange rates".

Once a data flow is selected, all of its key components are displayed. The parameters of the key components can be filtered within the selected structure. A multiple selection is also possible within a component: In "frequency", for example, both "monthly" and "annual" can be set.

It is also possible to combine the Data Structures search with the Text Search.

Example: After selecting the data flow "BBDA1 – German foreign trade" and setting the value "German foreign trade: Exports" for the key component "German foreign trade goods flow direction", the text "Switzerland" is entered. Both filters are taken into account in the result output.
